Hard water, explained
What hard water does to your home.
Florida's groundwater flows through limestone, picking up calcium and magnesium. Hardness is measured in grains per gallon (gpg) — anything over 7 gpg is considered hard, and much of Tampa Bay sits well above that.
Water heaters wear out early
Scale settles in the tank and coats heating elements, so it burns more energy to heat water and fails years sooner.
Appliances lose efficiency
Dishwashers, washing machines, coffee makers and ice makers clog with mineral buildup and need repairs or replacement sooner.
Plumbing narrows over time
Scale builds up inside pipes and fixtures, reducing water pressure and flow — especially in older Pinellas homes.
White crust on faucets and showerheads
Chalky deposits form on fixtures and clog showerhead nozzles, giving you weak, uneven spray.
Spotty dishes and cloudy glassware
Minerals are left behind as water dries, so glasses come out of the dishwasher hazy and spotted.
Stained shower glass, tubs and toilets
Hard water leaves rings and film that take harsh cleaners and scrubbing to remove.
Stiff, dingy laundry
Minerals fight detergent, leaving clothes and towels scratchy, faded and gray.
You use more soap
Hard water doesn't lather well, so you go through more soap, shampoo and detergent — and it leaves a film behind.

Your water and your health
What chlorine and hard water do to your skin, hair and body.
Dry, itchy skin
Chlorine and chloramine strip your skin's natural oils, especially in hot showers. Hard-water minerals leave a soap film that makes it worse — common triggers for eczema flare-ups.
Brittle, dull hair
Chlorine dries hair out and fades color-treated hair. Minerals build up on the strands, leaving hair flat, frizzy and hard to rinse clean.
Red, irritated eyes
Chlorinated shower water can sting and dry out your eyes, much like a swimming pool.
Breathing in shower steam
Hot water releases chlorine and disinfection byproducts into the steam you breathe — a concern for people sensitive to strong chemical odors.
Disinfection byproducts
When chlorine reacts with organic matter it forms THMs. Carbon filtration reduces them along with PFAS, VOCs and pesticides.
Taste that keeps you off water
Pool-tasting tap water means more sugary drinks and bottled water. Better-tasting water makes it easier to stay hydrated in the Florida heat.
Tampa Bay tap water meets federal safety standards. A whole-home softener and carbon filter address comfort, skin and taste; reverse osmosis at the sink is what removes dissolved contaminants from drinking water.

Ask anyone
Five questions to ask any water treatment company — including us.
1. Can you give me a price before you visit?
Truelson
Usually yes. A few questions on a short call is normally enough to give you a complete installed number. If your situation genuinely needs eyes on it — a well, an awkward plumbing run — we'll say so.
Ask anyone else
Ask for a number over the phone before you book anything. A company that will only quote in your living room is telling you something about how the close works.
2. How long is the in-home appointment?
Truelson
The free water test takes about fifteen minutes. We're not there to run a presentation at you.
Ask anyone else
Ask how long to set aside. If the honest answer is three hours, that is a sales process, not a water test.
3. What grain capacity am I being quoted, and why?
Truelson
48,000 grains on the Standard, 64,000 on the XL, 96,000 on the Dual Tank. Which one you need comes from your test result and household size — and we'll tell you why.
Ask anyone else
Ask for the grain number and the reasoning. 'It's our best system' is not a reason. A salt-free conditioner has no grain capacity at all — it prevents scale, it doesn't soften.
4. What are the components, specifically?
Truelson
USA-made 10% crosslinked softening resin, granular activated coconut-shell carbon, polishing gravel, and the ProValve with ceramic discs and 72-hour memory backup.
Ask anyone else
Ask which resin and which valve, by name. A brand sticker on the tank is not a component list.
5. What does the warranty cover, part by part?
Truelson
Lifetime on tanks, ceramic discs and dry parts. Five years on the control valve, circuit board and media. One year on labor and on the RO system.
Ask anyone else
Ask for it broken down by component, and whether labor is included and for how long. Many 'lifetime warranties' mean parts only.
